How to Calculate Soil Volume of a Raised Bed

The volume of soil required for a raised bed is calculated using the classic formula for rectangular prisms:

Volume = Length × Width × Height

Ensure that all dimensions are in the same unit (e.g., feet, inches, or centimeters). Once the volume is calculated, you can convert it to liters or soil bags using known conversion factors.

Example:

A raised bed that measures 6 ft (length), 3 ft (width), and 1 ft (height) would require:

6 × 3 × 1 = 18 cubic feet of soil.

Since 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.3168 liters, the total would be:
18 × 28.3168 ≈ 509.7 liters

This helps estimate how many 25L or 50L bags you’ll need (e.g., ~20 bags of 25L).
