How to Calculate Soil Volume for a Pot

To determine how much soil a pot requires, use the formula for the volume of a cylinder (most pots are cylindrical):

Volume = π × radius² × height

Where:

• Radius is half the diameter of the pot (in inches or cm)
• Height is the inner depth of the pot (in inches or cm)

Example: For a pot with a 12-inch diameter and 10-inch height:

Radius = 6 in → Volume = 3.1416 × 6² × 10 = 1,130.97 cubic inches

Convert to cubic feet: divide by 1,728 → ~0.65 cu ft of soil

Tip: Always round up slightly to account for settling and water drainage space.
