🧮 How to Calculate Topsoil

Calculating how much topsoil you need is simple if you follow these steps:

Choose your method: Either measure the length, width, and depth of your area, or enter the total area and depth.

Calculate volume: Multiply length × width × depth to get the volume.

To cover 1000 sq ft at a standard 2-inch depth, you’ll need about 6.17 cubic yards (or approximately 4.7 cubic meters) of topsoil. Always round up to account for settling.

For a 2-inch depth, you’ll need about 16 to 18 bags (40-liter each) to cover 100 square feet. Adjust for thicker layers or different bag sizes accordingly.

One ton of topsoil typically covers about 80–100 square feet at a depth of 3 inches. This can vary depending on moisture and soil density.
